Nelson College Commerce Teaching Block
The site for the new teaching block at Nelson College was on a sloping hill site which generally consisted of fill and was geotechnically challenging. An innovative light weight timber construction was proposed as it has benefits in reducing foundation requirements due to the light mass building.
The building structure was completely prefabricated off site, but was assembled on site using LVL pre-fabricated walls, floors and roof. This allowed the timber floor to clear span the classrooms, reduced the scaffolding requirements and increased safety on site as it reduced the number of components fixed at height. It also formed an immediate working platform.
This building features an exposed timber LVL structure which has its own inherent fire rating and a warm aesthetic with exposed natural materials. An acoustically separated floor provides acoustic ratings between floors as well as a void to run services and allow for future flexibility.
